South Early Winters Spire is the
highest and southern most spire at the Washington Pass area which
includes Liberty Bell the closest to the highway, Concorde, Lexington and Minuteman. The route shown here is a low 5th class rock route that follows the south arête to the summit. In early season the approach hike can be made from the hairpin corner on the east side of Washington Pass up the gully to the south side of South Early. This should only be attempted if enough snow covers the talus slope. The normal approach is from the Blue Lake trailhead just west of the pass and is the approach shown here. |
North on I-5 from Seattle to Mount Vernon. Exit Hwy 20 (North Cascades Hwy) east and follow to Washington Pass. The Blue Lake trailhead is about 1.5 miles east of the pass. The drive is very scenic with great overlook views of Ross and Diablo Lakes along the way as well as particularly spectacular overlook at Washington Pass with great views of Liberty Bell and the others from the east side.
